When it comes to collecting refundable beverage containers, there’s nothing more effective or profitable than going door-to-door.

Knock on doors at the right time

When it comes to collecting empties, timing is everything. That’s why you should find out when municipalities collect materials and organize your fundraiser before those dates. You’ll also want to make sure people are home when you come knocking.

Nights, weekends and holidays are your best bet for reaching the most people.

Get the word out

Make sure to include the name of your organization, your cause and the date of your fundraiser on your promotion flyers. Drop them in mailboxes, hang them on doors or, better yet, hand them out to people in person

But try not to go overboard; think about the environment and try not to bug your future donors too much!

Promote your fundraiser two weeks ahead

According to a study conducted by Substance stratégies, two weeks is the perfect amount of time for people to get their cans and bottles together.

Two weeks is also close enough to the event that people won’t forget about your fundraiser.

Recruit your team

Between collecting, driving and sorting, you’ll need a helping hand to collect all your refundable cans and bottles. A team of motivated volunteers is key to the success of your drive.

More volunteers mean more success

It’s a fact that if you have a big team working with you, you’ll collect a lot more refundable beverage containers.

If possible, you should also try to recruit the people that will benefit from your fundraiser, since they’ll be extra motivated to help.

Make sure you stand out

Whether you wear full uniforms or simply sport badges, clearly identifying yourself and your cause will give credibility to your initiative. Not only will you make it easier for people to recognize you and see how organized you are, it will also help strengthen your team spirit.

It’s important to separate all materials before recording them; you won’t be able to sort them once they’ve gone into the reverse vending machine.

Make sure you provide your volunteers with gloves, bags and a place to sort, and explain which containers have been recorded and which have not.

Think about where your collected containers are going

Before starting your collection, it’s important to figure out where your collected containers will be going.

If you’re bringing them to a grocery or convenience store, make sure they’re ready and prepared to collect your empties.

Keep your partners posted

Your partners have pledged to give you their empties because they believe in your cause. That’s why it is important to keep them informed of your progress, about the events you organize, and especially the results. It’s the best way to thank them for their generous support.
